MATfukuoka lecture at Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand.

This lecture is the event to share our experience in Fukuoka.

We'll talk about MATfukuoka Program, Tour, lecture and the workshop at Kyushu University.

MATfukuoka2010 was ended now. Today we all have a MUJI trip in Tokyo and will be back to Bangkok tomorrow. But I will give you some more details abuot the workshop, especially the workshop after the MATtour.

After the tour, we have to change the office from Daiohall to a studio in Kyushu U./Hakozakki Campus, where we have to work in group with a student from Japan.

The program is to renovate an old building, which is an historical building in Fukuoka, also in Japan. All of them might be demolish bacause the university will close this campus and move to a new campus in the south part of Fukuoka.

There are 3 buildings to chose. First, is The Main Auditorium which is design by the important architect in Fukuoka.Second is Faculty of Engeneering Building, which is the landmark of the university and the Japanese emperor have been visited here.And last, is the Administration Building, which is the iconic building of the Taisho period.

We have to seperate into 5 groups. Each group have to chose the building(s) and design how to keep the building while all area around is going to be something like factory, arts center or maybe transportation center.Actually, there are some idea about the landuse of the Hakozaki Campus in the future, but sensei said we did not have to think about the program that much, just have to create the 21st century space which is feasible and extraordinary.

I was in the group E with Papawin and we have 3 students from Japan, Kyosuke-san and Akihiro -san from Kyushu U. and Arai-san from Tokyo Denki U. After that we have to walk around the university to make a decision about the building. And we have a mid-jury on 9 pm. That mean we have 6 hours to chose a building and made a proposal to present to sensei.

After walking and voting, we all chose 2 building, Administration Building and Faculty of engeneer, which is face together and have a huge open space between it (I will uplod the photo of it soon.)

Next to the university is an old neighbourhood from Edo period so we decide to turn that huge space into a large open space and build a machiya(Japanese row house) around to connect a building we chose and the community around.And that huge space will conect to the road which is use for the festival, the plaza will be the center of the town, plenty of activities such as festivals, recreation or playing sports and the building will use for a town center or housing which can see the activitise in that plaza.

Just a quick update for the workshop.

After the MAT tour was ended.

We, architectural students from Chulalongkorn university had also attended in the MAT workshop. The program is to renovated the old selected buildings and space.

Sorry for didn't have working picture ^_^"

MAT FUKUOKA 2010 , OHORI NOH THEATER

It's Natja here,

Peach ,Ploy and I'd joined team E , working on Ohari Noh Center at Ohari koen on Saturday and Sunday(070810-080810).

From Tenjin , you can take a bus to Kuro Mon or take a subway to Ohori koen mae.

Completed in 1987 by Hiroshi Oe, a japanese architect who use western architecture elements on Japanese function building.

The layout idea of this building is "one mass one function", so there are lots of them and because of the idea from Japanese traditional layout planning , this layout just look like a flock of birds flying.Therefore between masses provided courts which make this building more special.

The roof of the theater are also special with 2 layers,the upper is a Japanese traditional roof called Hogyoyane and another one below is flatslab called Rukuyane which also designed to be a parapet.

As you will see wooden columns in front of the building.In fact there aren't designed to support the building but to represent a Japanese elements.

Here, the main hall.

It's prohibited to touch these poles with bare hands because they're made of hinoki tree which imported from Taiwan and very,very expensive.

This seating area adapted from "ENGAWA" , a very important space in Japanese house , which in this case is designed to be a waitng area with a view of the park.

In the court next to the lobby, there is a sculpture of "Umezu Shien" , an important and famous Noh teacher since Edo period, made from metal used during world war 2.

This is "young girl",a Noh mask displayed in the place.

and here are a kimono for the actor which costs 1,000,000 yen.

In the theater,you'll see a wooden stage.
The temperature and moist must be in controlled to prevent the wood from dwelling or damaged.

The stairs here believed to be a god path, drawing a conceptual line to a special seating area in the back

called "Sajiki Seiki" which is a step with tatami.

In the past, Noh was performed outdoor.Therefore it has a roof for the actor and white gravel around the stage to help reflecting the sunlight.

People came to Noh used to stand to watch and free to go anytime they want. But now there are theater chair line up like a western theater.

But still,there is the special seating area in the back called "Sajiki Seiki" .
Just like old days.

Most of Noh story is about deaths coming back to real world to tell about their sorrows.
There's a bridge called "Hashikakari"connecting between a main stage and "Kagami no ma",which represents the world after death or heaven.

Beside Hashikakari, there are 5 pine trees which the one in the left will smaller and smaller.Using the perspective technique to make the bridge to look longer than it actually is.

And there is a pine tree as a scenery on the stage and besides the little door for misician there is a bamboo.
Japanese usually use "Sho-Chiku-Bi" which is about 3 kind of trees using in Japanese culture.

And in this theater there is already has Sho and Chiku and the actor himself would represented as a plum flower.

The stage is made of Hinoki wood, so"Tabi" must be used during performing and walking on the stage to prevent a direct touch and it's the way to pay a respect to the stage .

Beside the stage, there is a room with a bamboo screen for a VIP. guest. From the room you will clearly see the performance but can't be seen from the other audiences.

Rooms in backstage are traditional Japanese rooms with tatami with the view of a small court.

At the end of the corridor is a dressing room and next to the dressing room is a "Kagami no ma" with a large mirror for an actor to check himself and meditate before wearing a mask and go out to perform.

Such a very,very great opportunities to join MAT Fukuoka this year.Meeting and working with lots of new people is such a wonderful way to know the world and also yourself.

And this would be one of my unforgetable memories ever.

ุ1st Day of MAT Fukuoka 2010

MAT Fukuoka 2010 is starting now!

We arrived Fukuoka on Wednesday 4th and found that some of the schedule have been changed a little. You can see the architecture list below.

There're a lot of people ,come from different universities in Japan to attend to MAT Fukuoka program, divided into 6 groups. (A-F)

Thai students are separated in 3 teams,

Team A : Kullatus, Sasiwimon ---> Nishi Nippon City Bank Headquarter

Team B : Parote, Tantap ----> Canal city and Fukuoka Bank Headquarter

Team E : Ploy, Praparvin and Nattaporn -----> Ohori Park Noh Theater

Our work is explain the imformation in English to foreigner visitors.

Today, the first group is Team A. Kullatus and me (Sasiwimon) are guide of Nishi Nippon City Bank Headquarter.

This building is completed in 1971, designed by Arata Isozaki (very well-known by many people in Japan not only an architect or architect student). Exterior facade is sandstone cladding, which imported from India and Sweden. Using the sandstone make this building looks softer than using glass facade like the other building. Although the outside is red but the interior of this building is white.

The highlight of this building is 6th floor(Sorry that we can't take a photo), 5 conference rooms were designed by 4 designer(because 2 rooms designed by Arata Isozaki). There're a lot of artworks which started painting at the same time as designed the interior.

The most interesting is the shadow room, an artist is Takamasu Jirou. Japanese student told me that room influened from the square room of Arata isozaki. Because Arata's artroom has not much shadow due to the indirect light design, so the shadow room has a lot of people shadows!

Some shadows are real some are fake painting maybe make people feel haunted.

At the end of the day we always have mini conference to sum up all things we've done all day(seriously). Everybody is working hard! We're quite enjoy such a great experience!

We're guide but no foreigner today (On 6-08-10 there are french student and 2 indonesia students, they're architecture student)

A T-shirt graphic was already finished and now in screening process at HitScreen shop.
I think it suppose to be finished before 2nd in August.

The reason that I adopt 3 of places being on a shirt is beacause there're 3 courses of tour and I think if it has at least one building in each course, it should be alright.

The next is our appointment because the time is getting closer
